A.2: Two Worldviews: Working as ‘One’ to Develop an Indigenous Program Model for Trauma-based Healing

This presentation focuses on the partnership between an non-indigenous agency and an indigenous therapist/elder working together to develop a new program model for trauma-based healing from an combined indigenous and western worldview. The learnings from the past year of building a program model and incorporating western program development concepts with indigenous content will be shared.

Program elements such as staff training, ceremony, protocols, teaching content framework, and evaluation will be explored using the lens of indigenous ways of knowing. This process that has evolved the “Cultural Interdependency Model” has been an exploratory journey between two worldview frameworks, each seeking to understand the strengths and knowledge of the other to offer a potentially replicable program that will positively impact and heal intergenerational trauma effects for indigenous people.
